The CR-V is the quietly-confident pick in the family SUV bracket. It doesn't try to look rugged or sporty — it just works for years. Here's how to pick a great one.

Best generation to import

5th gen (2017–2022) is the sweet spot. Spacious, comfortable, well-equipped, and the 1.5L turbo is excellent when serviced properly.

The turbo oil-dilution issue

Early 5th-gen 1.5T engines (2017–2018) had a known issue with fuel diluting engine oil in cold climates. Less of a problem in Ghana, but check service history and consider 2019+ to be safe.

Inspection priorities

  • Engine oil condition (smells like petrol = walk away)
  • Transmission behavior (CVT shudder under load)
  • AC system performance

Running costs

Roughly GHS 3,500–5,500/year for routine service. Parts are widely available.
