A landed budget of $10,000 (about GHS 130,000 at current rates) is one of the most popular brackets we work with at Montrad. It's enough to get a clean, recent, fuel-efficient car if you're disciplined about the make and model. Here are the vehicles we'd actually put our own money on.
1. Toyota Corolla (2015–2017)
The default answer for a reason. Reliable, cheap to run, parts available on every corner in Accra, and holds resale value better than almost anything else. The 1.8L petrol is the sweet spot.
2. Honda Civic (2014–2016)
Slightly more fun to drive than the Corolla, with similar reliability. Watch out for the CVT on early models — go for the 9th-gen sedan with the conventional automatic if you can.
3. Hyundai Elantra (2016–2018)
Often cheaper at auction than equivalent Japanese sedans, and surprisingly well-equipped. Resale isn't as strong, but if you plan to keep the car, it's a great pick.
4. Nissan Sentra (2015–2017)
Spacious cabin, frugal engine, easy parts. The trade-off is the CVT, which doesn't love Accra traffic. Drive gently and service the transmission fluid on schedule.
5. Kia Rio / Hyundai Accent (2017–2019)
If you want a newer car at the same budget, drop down to a subcompact. Modern features, low fuel consumption, and great for city driving.
What to avoid in this bracket
Stay away from European luxury cars under $10k landed. They're tempting but maintenance bills will eat the savings. Also avoid early-2010s CVT Nissans with high mileage.
Frequently asked
Can I get an SUV for $10,000 landed?
It's tight. You can find older RAV4s or CR-Vs, but most buyers in this bracket end up with a clean sedan rather than a stretched SUV.
